Eating foods that are rich in folic acid is important during pregnancy, expectant mums have been advised.
Sarah Montagu from the Association of Radical Midwives explained that a woman's lifestyle plays a significant role in a baby's development within the womb, as well as having an impact on her chances of conceiving in the first instance.
"Eating well is important so that the mum is well nourished, particularly of course eating foods that are high in folic acid and she can take folic acid supplements as well," she said.
"If someone is actually trying to conceive it is important to eat well. If there is any sort of lifestyle issues like drinking or smoking, it is a good idea to stop doing those."
Ms Montagu's comments follow recent research from the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health that indicated a reduction in the UK stillbirth rate the first dip since 2000.
The European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology reported last month that according to new findings, complications in early pregnancy or in previous pregnancies can predict the risk of further problems.
