Men aged 35 and over are less fertile and more likely to produce babies which miscarry than their younger counterparts. |
It found that when women turn 35, the chance of becoming pregnant declines from 14.4 per cent to 8.9 per cent.
However, the age of the father is also an important factor, said research head Dr Stephanie Belloc, who explained: "Men over 35 had a negative effect on pregnancy rates. And, perhaps more surprisingly, miscarriage rates increased where the father was over 35."
The research has "important implications" for couples who want to start a family later on in life, she added, and further studies need to be conducted.
Drinking, smoking and eating junk food can speed up the decline in fertility rates among men, the Daily Express warned.
