Pregnant women are 'discriminated' in the workplace

Pregnant women are still being discriminated against in the workplace, despite 30-year-old legislation designed to reverse the tendency, it has been suggested.

Richard Linskell, secretary of the Employment Lawyers Association, has asserted that while there has been a good deal of progress in tackling workplace discrimination against pregnant women, there is much that remains to be done in this respect.

"There is still a lot of discrimination in the work place, despite the fact that many organisations do have policies in place to prevent discrimination," he said.

"It's undoubtedly outdated, sex and race discrimination law has been in place now for over 30 years."

Mr Linskell's comments came in response to research by Employment Law Advisory Services that found most bosses in Britain would not hire a woman if they believed she was likely to fall pregnant in the near future.

In all, close to 3,000 women lose their jobs every year in the UK as a result of becoming pregnant, according to the Fawcett Society's most recent study into the issue.
