New guidance released on baby nutrition and diet

Mothers unsure about how to provide their youngsters with the best start possible in life in terms of diet and nutrition have been offered new advice.

The National Institute for Clinical health and Excellence (Nice) has issued guidance on how to ensure babies and toddlers are receiving all the nutritional benefits they should be in the early stages of life.

Furthermore, mothers are urged to consider taking vitamin D supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Deputy chief executive of Nice and executive lead of the guidance Dr Gillian Leng remarked that she hoped all women across the country would now be supported in providing their children with the best possible diets.

She stated: "Ensuring children eat healthily in the early years is very important for proper growth and development, and can modify the risk of chronic illness later in life.

"Unfortunately not all women are getting the support they need at the moment."

A recent study published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood recommended vitamin D supplements for children to cut the risk of developing Type 1 diabetes.
