Folate recommended for fathers

Men who want to ensure their sperm remains healthy should eat a folate-rich diet, new research has suggested.

According to a study published by the Human Reproduction journal, the vitamin could also prevent genetic abnormalities occurring in children.

While folate has often been recommend for pregnant women, this is the first study to conclude male intake of the vitamin could influence the health of new born baby, researcher Professor Brenda Eskenazi stated.

"This study is the first to suggest that paternal diet may play a role after conception in the development of healthy offspring," she said.

Professor Eskenazi added that many previous studies have suggested that sperm quality could be improved by the micronutrients in a man's diet.

Last month, researchers at Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London discovered that a baby's intelligence could be affected by their diet in the early stages of their life.
