Warning about food additives in kids' medicines

Children's prescription and over-the-counter medicines may contain food additives that have been linked to hyperactive behaviour, according to a new study.

The Food Commission analysed 70 common medicines for children, including cough syrups, pain relievers and antibiotics.

A total of 40 per cent were found to contain additives that previous research has suggested could lead to hyperactivity, the commission said.

Anna Glayzer, a spokesperson for the Food Commission, said that many parents could be unknowingly exposing their kids to unnecessary chemicals.

"Our survey has shown that medicines do not have to be coloured using suspect food additives, but with ingredient lists hidden inside medicine packets it is almost impossible for parents to choose between products," she commented.

European Union law states that most additives used in food must be clearly labelled on packaging, using either their name or E number.
