Is discipline becoming a thing of the past?

One in four parents will not discipline their children for fear of upsetting them, new research has found.

According to a poll carried out to mark the 150th anniversary of the cadet forces, more than half of mums and dads scold their children less than their own parents did.

A spokesman for Cadet150 said: "Discipline is all part of growing up and it's important for children that they are taught the difference between right and wrong.

"Mums and dads tend to avoid ticking off their children because it's easier than having to deal with them kicking up more of a fuss. They don't want to be seen as too strict."

The majority of Brits raised 20 or 30 years ago said they grew up respecting their elders, while 61 per cent feared a telling off from dads and 28 per cent from teachers.

Modern parenting tends to value a friendship between elders and children, placing more emphasis on openness than authoritative discipline.
