Kids under five are already aware of body image

Children as young as three begin to worry about their weight and body shape, it has been revealed.

Research published in the British Journal of Developmental Psychology found that 50 per cent of pre-school girls were already anxious about how they look, while a third wanted to lose weight or change their hair colour.

Mary George, spokesperson for UK eating disorder charity beat, said: "It should be remembered that the current attention paid to obesity can also affect children of this age who begin to worry about their weight unnecessarily.

"Young boys are also subject to worries around their body image and indeed at certain age levels can be as affected as girls around their self esteem and eating problems."

Parents are advised to celebrate the fact that beauty comes in different shapes and sizes with their children in order to reduce the risk of eating disorders in later childhood.
