In 1942, when Graco Metal Products was launched in Philadelphia, USA it did not make products for babies. In the first 11 years of its life, Graco made machine and car parts for local manufacturers. When one of the founders left, the remaining partner decided to make his own line of products.

At that time, one of Graco's employees, David Saint worked as an engineer and stained glass artisan for the brand. He was a father of nine children and had often watched his wife soothe a tired baby with a swing in their backyard. Inspired by what he saw, he went to the drawing board and 18 months later the world's first wind-up infant swing, the Graco Swyngomatic®, was born.

From then on, Graco was in the baby products business. And after selling millions of swings, Graco launched further innovations. In 1987, the firm's Pack N' Play® Portable Playards a playpen and travel cot in one, were designed by Nate Saint, the son of the Swyngomatic's inventor, with great success. The following decade saw Graco introduce the Travel System, the first product to allow parents to quickly click a car seat into and out of a pushchair, so sleeping babies can be moved without disturbance.
